A Special Gift

What makes a gift special?

From across the street, my eyes were focused on the beautiful red gown in the window display.

Once inside the Department Store, I was eager to check out the gown, but I knew I had to wait. My younger siblings would pick out their gifts first then it would be my turn.

Going to the store with my Dad was special because it was a chance to pick out our Christmas gifts. While waiting, I imagined how I would look in the red silky gown. I could see myself looking like a princess in it.

When it was my turn, I moved closer to Dad and told him; I want the red gown in the display. We went over, and he looked at the price tag. He was quiet for a while then he said, ok, I will buy it for you. I hugged him in excitement and I couldn’t wait to wear it on Christmas day.

Many years later, I still remember the excitement I felt when my Dad bought me that special red gown.

An Extra Special Gift

Let me tell you about an extra special gift I also cherish. Prophet Isaiah predicted His birth about 700 years before. He was born in a manger to a virgin.

The Lord himself will give you the sign.
Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel
(which means ‘God is with us’).
Isaiah 7:14

The extra special gift is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  He is a special gift because He is “God with us.”

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
    And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Jesus is special. The prophecies about him in the Old Testament, his virgin birth, and the visitors at his birth testify that He is God who came to dwell among us.

Three wise men brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh while the shepherds gave him the gifts of presence and worship. The heavenly hosts rejoiced at the birth of Jesus declaring Him as the Son of God, the everlasting King, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God and Prince of Peace.

His mission is to give us the gift of Salvation and redemption from sin, guilt, and shame.

  • Jesus is an extra special gift because of who He is.
  • He is an extra special gift because He is the Hope of the world.

I was about 13 years old when my dad bought me the expensive red gown. I wore it proudly on Christmas day with my hair elegantly cornrowed and I felt like a princess. For the first time, I recognized my Dad’s sacrifice.

When my father bought me that special red gown for Christmas many moons ago, he did so out of love.

When you receive a gift, do you wonder about the person’s motivation?

I wondered what I could give my Dad as a gift. I had no money, but I had plenty of ideas. We had a few Papaya trees in our backyard, so to appreciate my Dad, I made him a glass of fresh cold Papaya juice. My Dad’s face lit up when I shared that it was my Christmas gift to him.

My father’s gift pales compared to the Extra Special gift of Jesus. God sent His only Son, Jesus, as a special gift out of LOVE for you and me.

In appreciation for God’s gift of Jesus, I gave Him my heart when I was 7 years old.

  1. A timely reminder to us about the special gift of Jesus. Thank so much@

  2. Last Christmas my husband surprised me with a small sea turtle white gold necklace. We normally don’t exchange gifts of anything substantial. My parents had both been sick and we were not going to be able to be with them at Christmas, and that was the reason he bought me something special. However, two days before Christmas I got sick! (not from them) On Christmas day I was so out of it I hardly remember him cooking the ham. But he did, it was great, and while I was texting my parents, and checking in on them, I cherished the special effort my husband made to help my day be a little brighter. His successful efforts to cook dinner was also appreciated 🙂 <3 (Note: I felt well enough to eat!)

    1. Lisa, thanks for sharing your experience. I’m glad you enjoyed your husband’s special gift and his thoughtfulness.
      Blessings!
