What is Negative Thinking? A Mind Under Siege
Negative thought patterns are like invisible chains that bind our minds and hold us back from the life God intends for us. Whether it’s from constant self-doubt or an over-inflated ego, these thought patterns keep our focus on ourselves instead of on God. Our minds have become a battlefield as the enemy exploits these vulnerabilities to plant landmines of negativity at every turn. We all must actively work to overcome this spiritual stronghold to experience the abundant life that God has promised us.
Conquering Negative Thoughts: Perspectives and Lessons from the Promised Land
This reminds me of the Israelites’ journey to the Promised Land. After escaping slavery in Egypt, they faced the daunting task of conquering Canaan. This wasn’t a one-time battle but a prolonged campaign that required persistence, faith, and obedience to God.
In Joshua 1:9, God commanded Joshua, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This same encouragement applies to us in the spiritual warfare and mental battles for our minds.
The Israelites had to conquer the land city by city as they faced giants and fortified walls. Similarly, you and I must conquer our negative thoughts step by step, one thought at a time, facing our fears and breaking down mental strongholds. It’s a daily battle, but here’s the good news: God is right there with us, gently leading the way.
Remember the battle of Jericho in Joshua 6? The Israelites didn’t conquer this fortified city through standard warfare strategies but by following God’s unusual instructions to march around the city and shout. In the same way, God’s methods for conquering our minds might seem unconventional, but they’re powerful when we obey in faith.
Strategies for Winning the War Against Negative Thoughts
Just as the Israelites’ victory came through obedience and faith, our victory over negative thoughts will come through praising God and focusing on His attributes. This practice is like a reset button for your brain.
I remember when I first started this practice. I was in my kitchen, feeling overwhelmed by worry about our finances. Suddenly, I burst out, “Thank you, God, for your provision!” My husband peeked around the corner. He was probably wondering if I’d lost it. I just smiled and said, “Don’t mind me, I’m doing personal business with the Lord.”
This practice isn’t about denying reality. If you’ve lost your job and are sad, that’s real. But it’s about choosing to refocus on God’s goodness even in tough times. Philippians 4:8 instructs us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Practical Steps: Your Spiritual Battle Plan for Overcoming Negative Thoughts
Here’s how you can practically apply this strategy to your “Jericho” negative thinking situations:
1. Start a list of the attributes of God. As you read the Bible, jot down descriptions of God’s character.
2. Use these attributes to spontaneously praise God throughout the day.
3. Create mental images or pictures for each attribute to make them more vivid.
For example, when I praise God as the ‘Most High God,’ I imagine Him seated on a majestic throne, high above all creation. When I think of Him as ‘King of Kings,’ I picture a royal procession with Jesus at the head, crowned with glory.
When I praise God as my fortress, I envision an awe-inspiring castle on top of a mountain, with its walls shining with divine strength and pure light surrounding it. Inside this majestic castle are beautiful halls filled with God’s promises, and at the heart is a throne room where God welcomes me as a loving Father. He offers unshakeable security, peace, and comfort.
Let this picture of God as your fortress serve as a powerful reminder that in Him, you have unshakeable security, constant protection, and a source of strength that can withstand any storm of negative thoughts or external challenges.
This practice aligns with Psalm 34:1, which says, “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

A Challenge for You to Overcome Your “Jericho” Moment If You’re Willing.
Let me challenge you to try this for seven (7) days. Set reminders on your phone if you need to. Pause throughout your day to speak out God’s goodness. It might feel awkward at first, but stick with it. You’re not crazy—you’re conquering your Promised Land!
Remember, just as God was with the Israelites in every battle, He’s with you in this mental struggle. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” By retraining our minds to focus on God’s goodness, we can overcome negative thought patterns and experience a sound mind.
Negative Thoughts: From Captivity to Freedom
Like the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land, our journey from negative thinking to a sound mind is a process. It requires persistence, faith, and a continual choice to focus on God’s goodness.
As you embark on this journey, remember that you’re not alone. Just as the Israelites were part of a community conquering the Promised Land together, you and I are part of a community of believers supporting each other in this spiritual transformation to reclaim our minds from captivity to negative thinking.
