Understanding the Presence of Christ in Extended Family Conflicts: A Personal Story with a Mother-in-Law

One Thanksgiving, Susie’s husband’s family gathered at their house. It was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but tension filled the air. She and her mother-in-law, Lucy, had been at odds for months over their different approaches to family traditions. Susie usually felt joy and excitement around the holidays, but this was replaced by a sense of dread and anxiety as she suspected another clash with Lucy was likely to happen.

Lucy cherished the old ways and always insisted on specific dishes, decorations, and rituals she had followed for years. While Susie had some ideas about making new family memories.

The conflict came to a head when Lucy insisted on making her famous cranberry sauce from scratch. At the same time, Stacy had already prepared a different recipe. The tension was palpable. Lucy’s disapproval was evident in her every glance and word. As the family sat down for dinner, the tension in the atmosphere made it almost impossible for everyone to enjoy the meal.

Lucy’s critical comments and Susie’s defensive responses had built a wall between them. They turned the family gatherings into tense, uncomfortable affairs. The strain in their relationship overshadowed the festive spirit that should have filled their home and left a palpable sense of discomfort that dampened everyone’s mood.

Dealing with the conflict with Lucy brought on a whirlwind of emotions for Susie. Each critical comment she made felt like a jab to Stacy’s heart, which stirred up feelings of inadequacy and frustration. She found herself constantly on edge, bracing for the next critique.

There were moments of intense sadness as Susie longed for a close, loving relationship with her mother-in-law. Anger bubbled up inside Susie as she felt resentful, wondering why Lucy couldn’t see her perspective or appreciate her efforts.

Guide to Peace and Wisdom: Understanding the Presence of Christ in Family Conflicts

As Stacy reflected on their arguments, she was overwhelmed by guilt. She questioned if her defensive responses contributed to the growing rift between her and Lucy. In a quiet moment, Stacy felt a stirring within. It was a gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit reminding her that God’s love has the power to heal broken relationships. She quietly excused herself and went to her room to say a quick prayer. Stacy asked the Holy Spirit to guide her words and actions for the rest of the family gathering.

Returning to the table, she felt a renewed sense of peace and decided to speak with Lucy privately. She decided to offer a listening ear and words of understanding. She also reminded Lucy of their love for their family and how the holiday season was an opportunity for forgiveness and reconciliation.

Later that evening, Stacy suggested an activity the family used to enjoy, baking pumpkin pies together. Though Lucy hesitated at first, she eventually agreed to join in. The tension began to melt away as they mixed the dough and prepared the filling.

Everyone was in the kitchen, and chatter and laughter filled the air as family members shared memories. When the pies were done, it felt like a burden had been lifted. The Holy Spirit had begun a healing process, and Stacy trusted He would continue to work in her relationship with Lucy.

7 Practical and Important Steps to Foster Harmony with In-Laws

1. Seek Divine Assistance: Praying for Divine wisdom for your family members, gatherings, and interactions is wise. Ask God to bless them with love, peace, and understanding. Stacy prayed a simple prayer when she faced conflict with her mother-in-law, Lucy,  “Holy Spirit, please fill me with your wisdom and peace. Guide my words and actions.” James 1:5 reminds us, If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

2. Listen with Love: Instead of focusing on being right, truly listen to your family members with an open heart. Proverbs 18:13 warns, “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” Listen with compassion, embrace empathy, and seek to understand their perspective, even if you disagree.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to listen with patience and compassion. Soften my heart to see my family members through your eyes and understand their feelings and needs.

3. Speak with Grace: Choose your words carefully, asking the Holy Spirit to help you speak kindly and avoid hurtful comments you’ll regret later. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us not to let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what helps build others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide my tongue and help me to speak with kindness, speaking words that heal and encourage.

4. Forgive Freely: Remember, we all make mistakes. Be willing to forgive, even if it’s hard. As Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). Let’s embrace forgiveness and release bitterness for inner peace.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to release any bitterness or resentment in my heart. Give me the grace to forgive as you have forgiven me. Amen

5. Set Boundaries with Love: If necessary, you can gently but firmly set boundaries to protect yourself from hurtful behavior (Proverbs 22:24). Establishing boundaries is not unloving. It’s healthy and a way to honor yourself and your relationship with God.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me the courage to establish healthy boundaries and the wisdom to do so lovingly.

6. Practice patience and kindness: Remember, changing hearts takes time. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 beautifully describes: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs.”

7. Don’t take things personally: Sometimes, people’s behavior is more about their own struggles than it is about you. Instead, seek common ground and focus on shared interests and activities to unite your family. Remember that caring for yourself and your emotional and spiritual well-being is also essential.

Dealing with conflicts with in-laws and other family members is never easy, but as Christian wives, we have a powerful advocate in the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). He can help us respond with love, grace, and wisdom. With His guidance, you and I can work through difficult relationships and find peace, even in challenging family situations.
