As Iron sharpens Iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. Proverbs 27:17
In our society, we pride ourselves on being independent. But that is not God’s design, we are made to thrive in friendships, relationships, and community.
When you are going through a tough time alone, you may feel isolated, lonely, and easily give in to despair. It is difficult to make it through a tough time without a friend or two to cheer you on.
Personally, I couldn’t have survived the Tsunami of trials that I went through without the support of wise godly men and women, who encouraged and walked with me during those trying times. I see these friends as Jesus’ hands and feet.
Wise friends help you stand under pressure
Daniel and his three friends were Jewish wise men who were in exile in Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream and requested an interpretation from the wise men of the land but they couldn’t so he commanded that they be executed.
But Daniel asked the king for more time, then he reached out and asked his three friends, Shadrach, Meshak, and Abednigo to pray. They did and that night, God revealed the meaning of the king’s dream to Daniel.
Daniel’s three friends were his accountability partners. They gave Daniel the strength to stand under the pressure.
Friend, you and I need a wise godly friend or two to sharpen us, encourage us when we are down, comfort us, and stimulate our thinking.
We cannot fulfill God’s plan and purpose for our lives without friends who challenge us, hold us accountable and tell us the truth in love.
We need a friend to encourage us as we also need to encourage others. It is mutual encouragement.
Are you in a mutually beneficial relationship with others? If not, pray and ask God for wise and godly friends.
