As parents, we do everything we can to prepare our children for life. We teach them values, guide them through challenges, and pray for their well-being. However, one area many parents often overlook in prayer is their children’s future and marital destiny.

Yet, the person your son or daughter chooses to marry can have a profound impact on their walk with God, their destiny, and even the generations to come.

Marriage is more than just a romantic union. It is a covenant designed by God. So it’s essential to partner with God and begin praying now for your child’s future husband or wife, even before they meet.

Why Should You Pray for Your Child’s Future Spouse?

Some parents may wonder, Is praying for my adult children’s future spouse really necessary? The answer is a resounding yes! And here’s why:

Strengthening Their Own Faith Journey
A godly marriage begins with two people who love God first. Praying for your son or daughter’s future spouse also includes asking God to mold your child into the person He created them to be so they are spiritually and emotionally prepared for marriage.

God’s Guidance in Marriage
Marriage was God’s idea from the beginning. In Genesis 2:18, He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” If God cares about marriage, shouldn’t you and I invite Him into our children’s marital destinies?

The Right Spouse Impacts Their Future
The person your child marries will influence their spiritual walk, emotional well-being, and life decisions. Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Praying now in partnership with God can help ensure they are connected to someone who strengthens their faith rather than weakens it.

Protection from Wrong Relationships
Just as God has a plan for your child’s life, the enemy does too. Satan often uses counterfeit relationships to distract, derail, or destroy destinies. Proverbs 19:14 states, “Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.” Praying in advance asks for God’s help to shield your son or daughter from relationships that are not God’s best.

Praying for Adult Son or Daughter: Examples of Parents Seeking God for Their Child’s Marriage

Abraham is a powerful example of a parent who took an active role in his son’s marital future. He didn’t leave things to chance. In Genesis 24, Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac, trusting God to lead him to the right woman. Abraham’s servant prayed, and God guided him to Rebekah, God’s chosen wife for Isaac.

Similarly, we can trust God to direct our children’s steps and bring the right person into their lives at the right time.

How to Pray for Your Child’s Future Spouse

Prayer for adult children's future spouse

1. Pray for Divine Connection

Ask God to orchestrate your adult children’s meeting with the right person.

Scripture:  A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9

Prayer
Father, I trust You to bring the right spouse into my child’s life at the right time. Let their paths cross in Your divine timing, and let no obstacle stand in the way of Your perfect will.

2. Pray for Godly Character in Their Future Spouse

Pray that your son or daughter’s future spouse will love the Lord and walk in righteousness.

Scripture:  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Prayer
Lord, I ask that my child’s future spouse be someone who honors You, walks in integrity, and loves my child with a Christlike love.

3. Pray for Protection Against Wrong Relationships

Ask God to shield your adult children from ungodly relationships.

Scripture: Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14

Prayer
Father, I pray that my child will not fall into relationships that are not from You. Protect them from counterfeits and lead them only to what aligns with Your will.

4. Pray for Patience and Trust in God’s Timing

Waiting for the right spouse can be difficult. Ask God to give your adult children peace and patience while waiting.

Scripture: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Psalm 37:7

Prayer
Lord, help my child to trust in Your perfect timing. Let them not rush into marriage out of pressure or fear, but wait on Your best for them.

Encouragement for Parents of Adult Children: Keep Praying and Trusting God

Praying for your son or daughter and their future spouse is an act of faith. Even if they aren’t thinking about marriage yet. Your prayers are already at work in their future!

Isaiah 54:13 declares, “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be their peace.” Stand on this promise and believe God will direct your son or daughter’s steps and prepare them for a godly, fulfilling marriage.

Remember that God’s timing is perfect, so keep praying, keep believing, and never give up!
