When Your Adult Children’s Choices Feel Like Your Failure: Finding Your Worth in Christ

Sandy showed up every Sunday. She read the bedtime stories and drove to every practice. She prayed over her children before they could even talk. And one afternoon, with her coffee going cold in her hands, she said the thing so many of us carry and never say out loud: “I keep wondering what I did wrong. Because if I’d done it right, my child wouldn’t be living the way they’re living.”

Sweet friend, if you’ve ever read your adult children’s choices like a report card on your own soul, this is for you. Their detour feels like your failure. Their distance feels like your verdict. And in the quiet moments, you wonder if a better mother would have a different ending.

I want to gently speak to that aching place in your heart today. Because what it’s been telling you is not the truth.

You’re not a Failure: Finding Your Worth in Christ

Your worth was settled before your children were ever born. It does not rise when they do well, nor does it fall when they struggle.

The lie with a Bible verse taped to the front of it

Let’s name what’s really happening, because naming it takes away some of its power. When your adult children make choices you grieve, something in you doesn’t just feel sad. It feels guilty. And guilt whispers: “Good mothers produce good outcomes. My outcome is broken. Therefore, I must be broken.”

Here’s why that statement feels so true. You poured your whole self into these children, and in the process, your identity got entwined with theirs. So, when they hurt, you don’t just feel it as their mother. You feel it as a measurement of you and a reflection of your worth.

But that equation is a lie with a Bible verse taped to the front of it. Yes, you and I are called to train our children in the way they should go, so that when they grow up, they don’t depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). We plant, water, and pray. But somewhere we took a proverb, which is a wise guiding principle, and turned it into a personal sentence. We decided that if we’d just been good enough, we could have controlled another person’s soul. And no mother can carry that. You were never meant to.

What God actually says about your worth

You are not a failure and your adult children's choices do not define your worth

In Isaiah 43, God speaks to His people in one of their lowest seasons. Listen to how He opens: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Your worth is not anchored to your performance, your results, or the choices of the people you love. It’s anchored to the One who formed you, named you, and bought you back.

And He continues in verse 4: “Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you.” Read it slowly. Precious. Honored. Loved. Right now. Whether it’s on a day your child won’t return your calls, or on the night you lie awake replaying every decision. In that exact moment, the word God uses over you is honored. Your child’s choice did not change one syllable of that sentence.

The verse that sets a mother free

There’s a verse we rarely preach, and it sets a mother free. Ezekiel 18:20: “The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child.” God Himself draws a line between your soul and your child’s soul. He does not hold you responsible for the choices another adult makes with their own free will.

Think about this. The most perfect Parent in the universe has prodigals. God raised a whole garden of children who walked away from Him, and God is not a failure. So if a flawless Father can have children who wander, then your child’s wandering is not proof of your failure. It’s proof that they, like every one of us, are human, and free, and on a journey only God can fully see.

Why we hold the guilt so tightly

Releasing the guilt does not mean you stop grieving. It means you stop grieving the wrong thing. You can lay down “this is my fault” and still carry “I love them and I long for them to come home.” Those are not the same weight. One is a lie crushing your chest. The other is love, and love you can carry with God’s help.

And can I say one more thing gently? Sometimes we hold on to guilt so tightly because it feels like control. If it’s my fault, maybe I can fix it. But that’s a cage. As long as you believe you caused it, you’ll believe you have to be the one to save them, and you’ll wear yourself to nothing doing a job that belongs to God. There’s freedom on the other side of “I am not God.” It’s the freedom to love your child rather than manage them. To pray instead of panic. To keep the door open without keeping the ledger.

The only verdict that was ever true about you

Your worth was settled at a cross, by a God who looked at you and said, “mine.” It does not rise when your children do well, nor does it fall when they struggle. It is fixed. It is finished. It is honored. And their story is not over, and neither is yours. The same God who is patient with your prodigal is writing a redemption you cannot see yet. Your prayers are not wasted. Your love is not wasted. Your years of faithfulness are not erased by a season you didn’t choose.

So today, set something down. That heavy sentence, “I failed, and the proof is my child,” lay it at His feet. It was never yours to carry. Pick up the only verdict that was ever true about you: precious, honored, loved, His. You are not too far. You are not too late. And this is not the end of your story.

You don’t have to carry this alone

If this stirred something in you, come sit with us. The Hidden Treasures Community is a circle of Christian women learning to rest their worth in who God says they are, not in what anyone else does. We’d love to walk this with you.
