In today’s post, I share a practical application of what can happen when we fast and pray.
Prayer and fasting are an invitation to partner with God and increase our sensitivity to where he is working and what he is doing in our lives. If you missed last week’s post about why fasting and prayer are essentials in every believer’s toolbox, read it here.

A Listening Heart

In 2010 my family planned a trip to Orlando for Thanksgiving. During my time of fasting and prayers a few weeks before the trip, the Lord laid on my heart to pray about the trip. I wasn’t sure exactly what to pray, but I asked the Lord to pray for us by his Spirit.

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:30 NLT

While preparing for the trip, I felt I was to make copies of several hymns to sing on Thanksgiving Day before our meal. Throughout the week, this task was at the back of my mind. At the last minute, I made copies of the hymns.

We arrived in Orlando and settled in without any problems. On Thanksgiving Day, I cooked a meal for my family. While waiting to eat, I brought out the hymns and my Bible. We sang our hearts out to the Lord. Then we took turns and read Bible verses, prayed, and then shared our meal.

After the meal, the children went up to their room to play while I cleaned up the dishes and tidied the kitchen. When I finished, I wanted to lie down, but I kept hearing in my spirit, Sit and watch TV with your husband.

A Sudden Sound at the Door…

My husband dozed off in the chair, but I did not feel the release to leave, so I sat there and whispered prayers of thanksgiving to God for my family. Suddenly, I heard a sound as if someone was fiddling with the door lock. I went to the door and asked who it was. I could see a man and a woman through the peephole. The man unlocked our door.

I pushed against the door with all my strength and held on to the lock mechanism. The man yelled, “Open this door! This is a home invasion!

I started screaming for someone to call 911. The Lord infused me with strength and helped me hold on to the lock on the deadbolt. Looking back, I see God’s grace and mercy to thwart the Enemy’s plans that day. He did not allow evil to befall my family.

Through fasting and prayer, God sensitized me in the spirit to what he was doing and where he was working in our lives. Ask the Lord to show you how you can deepen your relationship with him through fasting and prayer.

Where is God at work in your life? What would it look like if you accepted his invitation and joined him there?

Prayer
Lord, you have done great things. When I think about what could have happened if the intruders had been successful, I burst forth in praise. You are a God of wonders. You give strength to your people and never let them be put to shame. Thank you for filling me with the wonder of your love and joy. Amen
