Scripture Treasure
You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Exodus 18:18
The scripture from Exodus 18 gives an example of what can happen when we take on too many responsibilities. We get overwhelmed and are effective in pursuing our vision and goals. Moses was a leader of the Israelites but he also served as a judge. The people stood around him from morning till evening to present their disputes.
Moses, Father-in-law Jethro, saw that he was doing too much and asked Moses, Why do you alone sit as a judge while all the people stand around you? Then he told Moses the work was too heavy for him to handle alone and he would wear himself out.
Then he reminded Moses of his primary role, which was to be the people’s representatives before God. He advised Moses to share the workload by teaming up with a few capable, honest, God-fearing men to serve as judges for the people. This would make the workload lighter.
Friend, perhaps like Moses, you have a big vision and goals. But bringing your vision to life will require teaming up with others. Why? Because God has gifted you in unique areas, and you need others to help you with the parts you are not so good at. You can do a lot in your area of giftedness but if you want to effective, you need others.
Life is not a solo act, so don’t wear yourself out. Teaming with others will multiply your efforts and give you a chance to grow.
Perhaps, your vision this year is to run a marathon, be 30 pounds lighter, write a book, or start a new business. In what ways will you team up with others to pursue your vision and accomplish goals this year? Feel free to share in the comments.
