A friend called recently for advice, and our conversation prompted me to write this post. She was involved in an accident, and the car was totaled. She was thankful that the insurance reimbursed her to get another vehicle.
But she was struggling to decide which car to get. She’d prayed but couldn’t decide, so she called to ask my advice. After listening to her, I sensed that she knew what she wanted but was afraid to give herself permission to own her choice. Rather than give advice, I asked two questions.
What do you really want?
What would it look like to give yourself permission to own your choice?
She was quiet for a while. As a coach, I’m ok with silence because that’s where the magic happens. I prayed silently while waiting for her to process her thoughts.
In the end, she said, “I know the car I want,” and then she shared her reasons for making that choice.
Can you relate? Are you thinking about starting a business, a new career, or ministry, or going back to school? Maybe you’re considering relocating to a new town or establishing boundaries in a difficult relationship. Perhaps you’ve prayed about your choice, agonized over it, and spent sleepless nights pondering.
You’ve got an idea of what you want but feel scared to take the first step because you’re afraid you’ll make a mistake or you’re worried about what others would think. Whatever it is, it can keep you and me from pursuing our goals and realizing our God-given dreams.
Here is the truth. God has given you and me everything we need to make wise decisions and live godly lives.
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:3
Giving yourself permission means allowing yourself to be, feel, do, and own your choices and their consequences. At some point, we all need to take that risk and trust in ourselves to make the right choice. You need to give yourself permission to live out your purpose so you can truly enjoy your life.
3 Benefits of Saying Yes to Yourself and Giving Yourself Permission
There is real power in embracing your true identity as a child of God and giving yourself permission to be, feel, and step into what God has called you to do. Embracing yourself and owning your choices will boost your:
1. Confidence: When you give yourself permission to take ownership of your choices and decisions, you will develop a more confident and stronger mindset. This will help you in all areas of your life, from making decisions to standing up for yourself and speaking the truth in love.
2. Clarity: Giving yourself permission allows you to stay focused on your goals and not worry about other people’s opinions or give in to your fears. It’ll give you clarity on what you truly want and need.
3. Fulfillment: You will only find true fulfillment once you start to honor who you are and take ownership of your decisions. You’ll find a new sense of purpose, contentment, and joy when you allow yourself to own your choices.
So, what’s keeping you from pursuing your goals and realizing your dreams? What’s keeping you from that new job, having a difficult conversation, starting a business, ministry, or writing a book?
Whether it’s fear of making the wrong decision, fear of what other people will think, or fear of failure, it’s time to take that risk and trust yourself to make the right choice.
You and I need to say Yes to ourselves and own our choices to fulfill our potential. That permission can come from within when we take the time to look deep inside us and remember that God has already equipped us with all the knowledge, skills, and abilities we need to make our dreams a reality (2 Peter 1:3).
And even if we make a mistake along the way, God will use that experience to bring us into a greater good. His strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Friend, take a breath, trust your gut, and allow yourself to be brave. Celebrate your small and big wins. Give yourself permission to pursue your dreams and let go of other people’s opinions or the fear that’s holding you back. Then watch those shackles break away, and the possibilities become limitless! God is with you every step of the way!
