My Identity

Friend: You are beautiful.

Me: Thanks.

Friend: Your skin is beautiful and so is your smile.

Me: Thanks. (Blushing)

I never thought of myself this way. Prior to this conversation with my friend, I saw beauty as doing acts of kindness and serving others. Though I look in the mirror daily, it was more to check that nothing was out of place before dashing out of the house each morning.

My friend saw the beauty in me and called it out. She helped me unwrap a gift that I had not fully possessed and increased my awareness.  However, I still had a problem with an internal voice that said things that did not match my external view when I looked in the mirror. It was constantly telling me how I mess up and never measure up.

Are you familiar with this internal voice?

It brings up all kinds of all negative stuff, such as, “not good enough, too fat, too skinny, not tall enough, if only I had”. Fill in the blank. This negative chatter is overwhelming!

Often, we allow this internal voice to define our identity. Other times, we base our worth on our jobs, accomplishments, material possessions, or status.

Thankfully, there is a remedy for this identity crisis.

The Bible is our secret mirror. It provides a solution to our identity crisis based on the gift of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. It is the true source of our identity that is not built on external beauty, job, or status.

God’s secret mirror declares that we are His beloved daughters.  When God takes your Selfie, he sees a beautiful woman, who is:

A crown of splendor in the Lord’s hands.

Redeemed.

Sought after.

No longer deserted.

Approved.

Dearly loved.

Called by a new name.

Chosen by God. (Isaiah 62: 4, 12)

Through Jesus Christ, you and I are adopted into the family of God. This means that in Christ, all the charges against us are canceled and nailed to the cross. Knowing and appropriating our identity in Christ is crucial to silencing the negative chatter of the internal voice.

This is especially important when we face difficult times. I have found that reminding myself daily of my identity helps me stay grounded internally and connected with God. It is a powerful weapon to ward off the fiery darts of the enemy.

These are additional declarations that I use daily for my Selfie:

I am free from accusations.

I am a joint heir with Christ.

I am sealed by the Holy Spirit.

I am redeemed from the hand of the enemy.

I am saved by grace through faith.

I am a full citizen of heaven.

I am forgiven.

I am blessed with all spiritual blessings.

I am complete in Christ.

I am alive in Christ.

I am an overcomer, through the blood of Jesus and the word of my testimony.

I am a masterpiece.

Do you struggle with your identity?

You are not alone. Gideon too struggled with his identity. While he was threshing wheat in a winepress and hiding from the Midianites, the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, The Lord is with you mighty warrior (Judges 6:12).

Gideon was a coward, yet God called him a mighty warrior. Like Gideon, we too are God’s masterpieces and works in progress. He sees what we can be. Because of Jesus, we are clothed in righteousness, strength, wisdom, and beauty.

Do you desire to stand firm through the storms and temptations of life? I invite you to learn more about your identity in Christ and embrace it wholeheartedly.

Knowing my identity in Jesus enables me to stand firm in my faith.
