Breaking News: 10 lepers healed, 1 Returned shouting Praise in Northern Samaria.

On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus encountered ten lepers on the outskirts of town. In need of healing, they called out

to him, Jesus, master, have mercy on us.”

Jesus asked them to go and show themselves to the priests. And as they went, they were healed.

I wondered why they had to go and show themselves to the priest. I think it was because Jesus was mindful of the culture at the time and the Old Testament laws that only the priest could confirm a leper’s healing.

Feeling Unclean? Healing and Gratitude are Possible with Jesus

Finding Hope Healing and Gratitude in the Storms of Life

Three things stand out to me in this story of the 10 lepers and their healing.

  1. Because leprosy was highly infectious and debilitating, lepers were ostracized from society. They lived on the edge of town with other lepers, which often meant living with shame, guilt, isolation, feelings of rejection, and being unwanted.  They were considered unclean. You and I may not have leprosy, but what physical, emotional, or spiritual ailments make us feel like unclean and unworthy lepers? The solution begins with admitting we have a problem and calling out to Jesus just like the 10 lepers.  I recall all the times during a personal crisis, illness of loved ones, and distress that I’ve called out and asked Jesus to have pity on me. Jesus is faithful to answer. He is full of compassion and cares about the underdog. With Jesus we can have hope and healing.
  2. Jesus’ power is released as we act in faith. He told the lepers to go and show themselves to the priests. Faith is a necessary part of healing and restoration. When we walk in faith according to God’s word, we, too, can receive physical, spiritual, and emotional healing and restoration.
  3. After he was healed, one of the lepers returned, praising God with a loud voice, and threw himself at Jesus’ feet. I can totally relate to this leper. On many occasions, I grab my hymn book and praise God in Gratitude for healing me or a loved one. I may not be able to carry a tune, but I have fun making a joyful noise to the Lord. And oh, what peace and joy flood my heart. A heart of gratitude and a thankful spirit full of praise brings pleasure to God.

10 lepers were healed, but only one came back full of praise and Gratitude.

Jesus is faithful and is willing to meet you and me at the point of our needs regardless of our circumstances or storms in our lives. Remember, Jesus is a Mighty healer. He is more than enough to meet all your needs.

As we celebrate Christmas, how have you experienced God’s healing power? In what ways will you thank God for meeting your physical, spiritual, and emotional needs?

With Jesus, the unclean becomes clean, and the broken are made whole.

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Luke 17:15-16
