Running with Endurance When Life Feels Too Heavy

A Listening Heart

Take the first step towards healing and growth. Book your free call now and let’s journey together in faith and friendship.

Have you ever felt like life is asking you to run a marathon with weights strapped to your shoulders?

For me, Hebrews 12:1-3 often comes alive in those moments. It paints a picture of a runner on a long, difficult track, surrounded by a cheering crowd. And truth be told, some days, I feel that runner is me, except the track is rocky, the air feels heavy, and I’m tempted to sit down and give up.

Maybe you know the feeling too.

  • In your marriage, the constant arguments or icy silence can overwhelm and wear you down. You long for connection, but it feels like you’re running alone.
  • In parenting, especially with adult children, your heart aches as they make choices you wish you could change. You pray, you hope, but the weight of worry presses in.
  • In your own heart, the battle with low self-esteem whispers, “You’re not enough. You’ll never measure up.” And it feels like a thousand-pound stone holding you back.

So, what do you do when life overwhelms? Hebrews Chapter 12 reminds us that we are not alone in the race and we can run with endurance:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1, NLT

When I picture that “great cloud of witnesses,” I imagine Abraham, Moses, David, Paul, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Sarah, Abigail, Ruth, Peter, John, James and oh, Jesus, all of them leaning forward in the stands, not just politely clapping but cheering with passion, calling out your name, and my name: “Don’t quit! Keep going! God is faithful. The finish is worth it!”

And at the center of it all, Jesus Himself, our Champion.

How to Run Life’s Race with Endurance: Hope for Marriage, Parenting, and Self-Worth

Running with Endurance

Hope For When Marriage Feels Like a Marathon

Marriage isn’t a sprint. It’s a lifelong run. There are seasons when the pace feels joyful, and others when it feels like your legs are made of lead. But God hasn’t left you to run it alone. His love empowers you and me to keep going…

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:7, NLT

Even when your spouse seems distant or unresponsive, you can endure by fixing your eyes on Jesus, who strengthens you with His unfailing love.

Hope for When Parenting Breaks Your Heart

Watching an adult child stumble can feel like carrying an unbearable burden. But here’s the truth: that burden was never meant to be yours alone. God invites you to give it to him and let him carry it for you.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7, NIV

Just as Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him, you can endure the long road of prayer and trust, knowing your children are seen and loved by God more than you can imagine.

Hope for When Low Self-Esteem Holds You Back

Sometimes the heaviest weights aren’t outside of us but inside, shame, fear, and feelings of worthlessness from trauma. These weights can trip us up and whisper lies that contradict who we are in Christ.

But God’s Word declares:

“You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” Isaiah 43:4, ESV
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10, NLT

Friend, when you feel weak, remember that endurance doesn’t mean perfection. It means choosing, again and again, to keep your eyes on Jesus, and run your race knowing that He is cheering you on.

Run with Endurance: A Faith Step You Can Take Today

Take five minutes today. Write down one “weight” you’ve been carrying, whether it’s bitterness in your marriage, worry for a child, or a lie about your self-worth. Pray this prayer:

“Lord, I lay this down at Your feet. I choose to run free, fixing my eyes on You.”

Then tear up the paper as a prophetic act of releasing that weight.

Endurance and Hope for the Race Ahead

The truth is this: you don’t run this race alone. You are surrounded, supported, and sustained. Christ Himself is with you, cheering you on, carrying you when you stumble, and filling you with His strength when yours runs out.

So, take a deep breath. Drop the weight. Lift your eyes. Run, not perfectly, but faithfully, because the One who called you is faithful.

Reflection: What weight do you need to lay aside today so you can run the race God set before you? Share in the comments below so we can pray along with you.
