3 Influential Mothers Who Gave up their Pain for Lasting Peace

I am encouraged by the lives of Abigail, Hanna, and Mary. These influential mothers in the Bible found peace and comfort as they surrendered their shattered dreams, wounded hearts, and broken lives to God.

Abigail, wisdom in a difficult marriage.

Abigail was married to Nabal. Her shattered dream and wounded heart was being in a dysfunctional marriage with a husband who was a great provider but was arrogant and unreasonable. His foolish ways of repaying evil for good exposed his family to danger.

Thankfully, Abigail was a praying woman. God gave her the wisdom to speak to David and avert the disaster that would have befallen her family. You can read more about her story in 1 Samuel 25.

Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool, and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent… as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hands,… let this gift, which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you. Please forgive your servant’s presumption.1 Samuel 25: 24-26

Hanna, from barrenness to praise.

Hannah knew a thing or two about a wounded heart. For years she lived with barrenness and the taunting from her husband’s second wife. Eventually, Hanna learned to surrender her fears and wounded heart to God. One year while worshipping at the temple in Shiloh, she cried out to God from the depth of her heart. I imagine her saying words like this:

Help, God—the bottom has fallen out of my life! Master, hear my cry for help! Listen hard! Listen to my cries for mercy. Psalm 130:1 MSG

In time, God answered Hanna’s prayer, and she gave birth to a son. She gave up her son, Samuel, to serve God in the temple. God dried Hanna’s tears, healed her wounded heart, and gave her more children. Read more of her story and praise in 1Samuel 1-2.

Mary, provision, and protection in the midst of deep grief.

From conception to birth, everything about Jesus was unusual. Indeed, Mary, the mother of Jesus, was familiar with shattered dreams and wounded hearts.

Mary pondered many things in her heart. Perhaps she had a secret desire for Jesus to take over the family carpentry business from Joseph. Alas, that dream was not to be realized.

Instead, Jesus was popular among the poor, sick, and needy as a healer and teacher. Among the Jewish scholars and elders, he was controversial for claiming to be the Son of God.

Can you imagine what it was like for Mary to see her son, Jesus, falsely accused and then nailed to the cross?

Talk about a wounded heart!

I believe it took courage and deep faith in God for Mary to give up her personal hopes and aspirations for Jesus. It takes great trust to hold on to God’s purpose, even when we don’t understand.

Although Mary experienced grief as Jesus’ mother, he did not forget her. Even while on the cross, He made provision for her care. Read more of her story in John 19.

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:26-27

You are not alone, whatever shattered dreams and broken situations are in your life right now. As a mom, you are precious to God!

Like Abigail, Hanna, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, you too can give up your worries in exchange for God’s purpose, peace, and joy.

Got any…

Shattered dreams? Give them to Jesus

Wounded hearts? Give them to Jesus

Broken lives? Give them to Jesus

He will turn your sorrow into joy!

The Lord alone can bring good out of all our pain and heartaches. It’s time to trust God and exchange our pains for his peace and joy, starting today.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Prayer

Lord, thank you for mothers and all the godly women who play the part of mother figures in our lives. For those hurting moms, comfort their hearts and mend their broken places. Take control of the specific situations they are dealing with. We give all our burdens all up to you, Lord. Bless all mothers with peace, patience, kindness, and love. Thank you for your faithfulness. Amen.

Happy Mother’s Day!

God loves You!
